Dr. Doom’s forecasts

1987 - “Change of direction for the Dow”

On 17 October, two days before ‘Black Monday’, Marc Faber warns about a ‘change of direction’ on the US stock exchange.

1989 - “Sell Japanese equities”

On 15 December Faber advised: ‘Sell your Japanese equities.’ And he was proven right: the Nikkei-225 lost around 40 per cent by October 1990.

1997 - “Bitter end”

On 13 August Faber forecast a ‘bitter end’ for the bull market in Asia. Over the following months a string of financial services companies, equity prices and currencies suffered sharp falls.

2000 - “Nasdaq overpriced”

Valuations on the US Nasdaq stockmarket are ‘difficult to justify’ said Faber on 31 January. In March 2000 prices crashed.

2007 - “Sell”

Faber issued warnings in good time before the start of the financial crisis. That was in 2007. In the spring of 2009 he then advised investors to return to the markets – he was proved right in both cases.

2010 – “Invest in equities and gold”

On 7 July 2010 Dr. Marc Faber recommended investing in equities and gold.
